Project Details
The new 242,000 SF facility will provide the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) with additional office and storage space for the Archives and Information Services Division (ARIS), the State and Local Record Management Division (SLRM), and the Talking Book Program (TBP), as well as staff support spaces. Volunteer operations for the Talking Book Program will also be relocated to this facility. This new modern archive and records center will replace the existing storage facility on Shoal Creek Blvd. with almost double the storage capacity while reserving space for future growth on this new campus. The 88th Texas Legislature funded this $210 million project to preserve state business records and historical artifacts.
The design concept splits the program into two components: an office structure scaled for people, and a warehouse scaled for storage. The main entry to the office building is highlighted by a glazed lantern element that extends through the roof, featuring historic images selected from the Archives digitally printed on the glass panels. The deep colonnade references the columns of the State Library and Archive’s Lorenzo de Zavala Building at the Capitol Complex while also providing shade from the western sun. Behind this, a two-story, robust warehouse provides a climate-controlled environment, specialized storage shelving, and operational areas for each program.
To accelerate the project’s design and development, TFC utilized a Design-Build procurement process, selecting JE Dunn and their design partner McKinney York Architects, with Broaddus USA as project manager, all working together toward an aggressive completion during the fall 2027.
