Project Details

A working couple with three young boys purchased this 1980s home to provide space for their growing family. While the improvement in square footage was welcome, the borderline repulsive décor of the existing kitchen was certainly not. Additionally, the clients wished to improve flow and connectedness, desiring a dynamic space to help them manage their hectic lifestyle. The renovation reorganizes the circulation, eliminating a dead-end kitchen, and opens up the structure, organizing it around a vertical “core,” composed of the pantry, laundry, and HVAC. The central, luminous boomerang island serves as command center for the busy household. Unique materials chosen for durability, sustainability and economy establish the spice-colored palette.

Sustainability: low-emitting cork ceiling, kitchen cabinets and countertops; rapidly renewable materials; energy-efficient HVAC, appliances, windows and lighting; and built-in recycling center
